Infunity Gate

interactive exploration of moiré interference patterns

Date: 2025

Materials: laser cut painted acrylic, high power addressable LEDs, motors, sensors, control electronics

Exhibited at:

  • 2025: Electric Sky Art Camp
  • 2025: A Patch Of Grass Music Festival
  • 2026: Portland Winter Light Festival

The Gate is a moiré kinetic sculpture that appears to shift and distort, composed of layered, simple patterns that morph and change with time. Participants are encouraged to interact with the installation, manipulating the patterns in real time to alter the interplay of light and movement. The gentle backlighting casts a soft, ethereal glow, accentuating the sculpture’s dynamic movement and creating an otherworldly ambiance. The installation rotates slowly, inviting you to become lost in the ever-changing, undulating patterns that emerge.

Background

Infunity Gate was created on a grant from Electric Sky Art Camp on the theme of "Moving It". The piece was inspired by an earlier small-scale work by Infunity. This all-new design featured novel fabrication methods: custom software to interactively design and test unique moiré patterns, a novel open-frame design for the primary discs, and interactive electronics using time-of-flight distance sensors for interactivity. This allowed a deeper sense of immersion as the viewer could navigate the interference pattern space, becoming immersed in the patterns that emerge.
